Hormonal Imbalance in Men; All You Need to Know

Hormonal imbalance is often associated with women but the truth is that men experience it as well.

In fact, they are also mentally and emotionally vulnerable to this condition. However, hormonal imbalance in men is not a subject that is openly discussed and this lack of conversation leaves men struggling with unfamiliar changes.

Symptoms Of Hormonal Imbalance

When it comes to male development, testosterone is crucial and too much or too little production results in dire side effects. Here’s all you need to know about hormonal imbalance in men.

Occurrence of Hormone Cycles

Men with hormonal imbalance tend to experience monthly and sometimes even daily cycles. These are periods when their hormones fluctuate resulting in biological and emotional changes.

For instance, it is not uncommon for a man to feel irritable, grumpy, stressed and to experience sudden and random extreme mood swings. Men also experience hot flashes that are characterized by flush appearance and excess sweating.

These flashes are uncomfortable, rarely last long and are then followed by a cold sweat.

Erectile dysfunction and low libido are common side effects

High sex drive is directly correlated with the level of testosterone and low levels result in low libido. Low levels of testosterone also cause erectile dysfunction, a condition that is assumed to occur in older men. Interestingly, 1 in very 4 men that suffer from erectile dysfunction are below the age of 401.

Testosterone is responsible for stimulating brain receptors, through a series of chemical reactions, to cause an erection. Without it, a man’s sex drive starts to decrease irrespective of their age.

It causes accelerated aging

Hormonal imbalance sometimes manifests as accelerated aging. One minute a man will be young and healthy and two months later they will look way older than they actually are. Sometimes the body muscles become flabby and they start experiencing premature baldness.

Unfortunately, most men associate this drastic body change to their lifestyle choices and completely ignore it. Some even result in intense exercise to get rid of the flabbiness, but more often than not, this rarely works.

You may have enlarged breasts

One of the strongest indicators of men's hormonal imbalance is gynecomastia2, a condition that causes enlarged breasts. Men rarely associate this with hormonal imbalance as most times the breast tissue growth is gradual and the breasts just appear slightly large.

While the physical implications of gynecomastia are minimal, the emotional stress that comes with it is substantial. You could opt for surgery but the best option would be to have your hormonal imbalance corrected.

Testosterone doesn’t cause aggressiveness

Contrary to popular belief, testosterone is in no way associated with aggressive physical behavior in men. This has a lot to do with underlying social and environmental factors.

The belief that aggressive men have high levels of testosterone is nothing but a myth.

Male Hormonal Imbalance: How to Deal With It

The effects of male hormonal imbalance are difficult to deal with, especially due to the stigma surrounding the condition. Ensure you seek treatment to reverse the symptoms and cure the imbalance.
